The chip industry is entering a new manufacturing phase

Semiconductor companies are continuing to push toward smaller manufacturing processes because modern computing needs more performance without a matching increase in power consumption. In September 2026, MediaTek announced a new mobile processor using TSMC's 2-nanometre technology, putting the advanced node directly into the conversation around next-generation smartphones.

What does 2nm actually mean?

The name is a label for a generation of semiconductor manufacturing technology rather than a simple measurement that describes every physical feature on a chip. Modern process names represent a collection of improvements in transistor design, density, power efficiency and manufacturing techniques.

The goal is to fit more useful computing capability into a similar physical area while controlling energy consumption and heat.

Why phones care about efficiency

Smartphones have limited battery capacity and very little room for active cooling. A more efficient processor can therefore improve the balance between performance and battery life. This becomes increasingly important as phones run local AI models, image processing, gaming workloads and increasingly sophisticated camera systems.

AI is changing what mobile processors need

New mobile chips increasingly include dedicated neural-processing hardware. Reuters reported that MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro is designed to deliver a significant improvement in on-device generative AI performance compared with its predecessor.

That trend matters because some AI tasks can be performed directly on a phone instead of sending every request to a remote server. Local processing can reduce latency and can also limit the amount of data that needs to leave the device.

The manufacturing challenge

Smaller nodes require extremely sophisticated manufacturing equipment, materials and process control. The economics are also difficult because advanced fabrication facilities are enormously expensive and yields must be high enough to make the chips commercially viable.

What consumers should expect

Consumers are unlikely to see “2nm” as a single feature on a phone specification sheet. Its impact is more indirect: faster AI processing, improved efficiency, more capable cameras and better sustained performance can all benefit from advances in semiconductor manufacturing.
